Interrogator: Go ahead. AVL: Well… I made some stupid remark to her. Her Mom is really into surveillance, so I figured she knew where secret caches were. In retrospect, that bottle of Vicodin would have been very helpful. We never found one. The place had been abandoned some time ago. I saw through a hole in the drapes that there was still stuff inside? Uh, but it was all just covered in dust. So, I began wandering the perimeter of the house along one side. It was raining, so I couldn’t see much - but I definitely remember the door I found. The house was, uh, wood mostly, and then here is this big radiation door - Interrogator: I’m sorry. AVL: It seemed out of place, certainly. And, uh, it’s a farm so why something irradiated? It seemed odd. And I looked at the sign on the door. Uh, I looked it up later. It’s in reformed egyptian. Well, somewhat. Uh, kind of… the logical evolution given reformed egyptian as a starting point, one possibility of that, that sort of thing? Interrogator: What sort of thing? AVL: I can send you the picture. Anyway, so I walked up to the North End of the building. There was no patio or anything; the house just ended. Seemed… normal. Totally normal. Anyway, it was raining, so in pretty quick succession, I finally deployed my umbrella, at which point my notifications went off and the thunder struck? So, for a moment, I was pretty distracted. I continued walking north, there’s a sort of liminal zone out there that could be referred to as “A Yard” but it’s pretty liminal compared to the area in front of it. It’s fenced off, as best as we could figure out. There are flyers along the fence. The flyers are in various languages, more than I could count, and they… caution against entering, what the flyer repeatedly refers to as “THE FIELD.” Interrogator: The Field? AVL: Well, yeah. Um, I mean it’s a chain link fence, so you can see in. It’s, uh, it’s just corn as far as the eye can see actually. And it was right around 2:59 or 3:00 when I came upon the fence, so despite the rain, it was pretty easy to see pretty far in. I mean, the corn seemed fine, I guess. Somehow, it was okay in there. I’m sure the rain was helping. Interrogator: I’m sure. And, so then, you were sent the link. AVL: Yes, honestly, Betty and I had been so consumed with this whole virus thing, we had totally forgotten about the Explorer Mission. Anyway, so I’m standing at this fenceline, looking in both directions for an end, and then my cell phone beeps, it’s a link to the live feed for Explorer. So, I click it and it takes me to the YouTube page, but the red play button is gone, and in its place is a button that says “Watch This.” It seemed provocative enough. So, I put in my headphones and turned it on. Uh, George was on some story. Houston cut in, told them to pack up and go home, immediately if not sooner. They were trying, someone died, the ship got hit, presumably those in the shuttle died. Uh, and then Sandra - I hope she got free of that pylon. By that time, the feed had been cut and I found my way inside and up to Betty. Interrogator: How was Agent Cooper? AVL: She was fine. She was in one of the bedrooms. I guess she’d opened the door, just as a notification went off on her phone. It was her Mom, sending her the youtube link to the Explorer feed? So, when I found her, right after the feed cut out, she was just sitting on the ground. Just an empty room. (Knock) Interrogator: Come in. ABC: Is Agent Lodge done? Interrogator: Not quite. Why don’t you sit down, Betty? AVL: So, by that time, it had stopped raining and the sun had come out. So, we had another look around. There was that radiation door with a warning sign in Reformed Egyptian. The fence blocking off the field. Some old farm buildings. No animals or anything there and totally clean. Basically: ready for future use. Interrogator: Clean animal area but dust on the furniture inside? ABC: That’s one of the odd things. The whole property… it felt vaguely reminiscent of something, but, uh, like things weren’t quite lining up quite correctly. An imperfect lock during a docking procedure really. AVL: I couldn’t see an end in either direction to the side of The Field that I approached. Interrogator: That makes sense because it was raining. AVL: No, but then the rain stopped and the sun came out. I should have been able to see something at least looking in one direction, but… and what makes even less sense is that… There are other pieces of geography surrounding this Field. So, it should be bounded by other things. Landlocked. I mean, so, we drove up to it from a dirt road, a paved road, and the freeway. We parked on the road. We approached the property. We separated. I walked one edge of the house and then found myself in an Indeterminate Yard. And then I approached an Infinite Fenceline. Somewhere in the course of those events, I must have passed some red line where the rest of spacetime fell away and the rules of that Field came true. (A beat.) AVL: But… I mean, I was wise enough to stay out. Then, someone sent me a live feed to the Explorer mission, found Betty, we looked the property over. I guess… except for some minor physical problems, everything was pretty white bread, indeed. Interrogator: Thank you, Agents. I guess that’s all. ABC: Can I ask you a question? Are you and Fox going out tonight? Interrogator: Yes, Betty. ABC: It’s been a long time for you guys, hasn’t it? Interrogator: Yes, Betty. ABC: But… you still love him, even after all this time. Interrogator: More than ever. The accumulation of time is a weight on my heart. (Cast: Interrogator: Gillian Anderson, AVL: Camila Mendes, ABC: Lili Reinhart)
